English has become a lingua franca and this accompanied the importance of teaching and learning that language. Majority of the scientific, economic and communicational media, sources and contents are in English all over the World. Therefore, knowing English will allow one access to a large amount of information which may not be otherwise available today.

School of Foreign Languages of Birûni University offers English classes based on our students’ relevant field needs. There are four main types of classes we offer to our students: Intensive English Program (a unique program to our university), English Preparatory School, and English for Specific Purposes Program and Standard English Program. All of them are designed to achieve the objectives of English language teaching at Birûni University.

 1 – Intensive English Program

English Preparatory School Program at Birûni University is integrated to the departmental courses based on the requirements of each department.  In this way, we aim to teach English to students without spending an additional year for language learning purposes. This system is unique and only administered at Birûni University in Turkey.

Program Content: Depending on the requirements of each department, the program provides online and in-class lessons. Depending on the needs of the faculties we offer approximately 700-850 hours of General English classes a year.

English Courses in Varying Levels

Intensive English courses may be consisted of four levels depending on the levels of the academic year. Intro Level (Beginner), Level A (Elementary), Level B (Pre-intermediate), and Level C (Intermediate). Each level has a 9 week training period. In an academic year a student has an access to a three-level-English training.

Online Programs

There are varying online studies for different levels and book series.

Exam Format

Reading and comprehension skills are assessed through multiple choice exams. Speaking skills evaluation is based on one-to-one interviews and student’s classroom performance. Writing skills are assessed via writing parts of the multiple choice exams.

2 – English Preparatory School Program

This program includes minimum 26 hours of classroom lessons and 12 hours of online works for those classes per week. Throughout the year, students receive a total of 1152 hours of English classes. The program is open to modification in terms of the percentage of the skills and weekly class hours each semester and year considering the students’ abilities and needs.

Modules and English Courses in Varying Levels

English Preparatory School Program has included so far 3 levels at the starting level: Module A (Elementary), Module B (Pre-intermediate), and Module C (Intermediate). It consists 8 tracks for the whole academic year. Each track consists of 8 weeks and 1 level. Each term includes 2 levels, and each academic year has 4 levels. When a student completes the prep program they are expected to be at least upper-intermediate level of competency.

Online Programs

There are online programs for each of the book series to support our students learning as off-campus studies.

3 – English for Specific Purposes Program

Those courses are designed to meet the needs of English as a language for specific departments and fields. Those courses are aimed at presenting students a system of knowledge for reading, receiving and sending information in English language that is connected with the main activities in studied specialty and suitable developing communicative skills.

As Foreign Languages School we consider Vocational English Classes as part of ESP program. The Vocational English classes give our students an opportunity to use their present knowledge of English in their fields of study and later in their work.

The Vocational English classes provide students with practices during the classes and enhance them to interpret texts, presentations and other related material all over the world. The classes require every student’s active participation through individual or group presentations and other activities in classroom.

Program Content: We offer 2-4 hours of yearly or semester based Vocational English classes considering the requirements of each department.

Exam Format: Exams may cover all four skills of the language depending on the concerns of the department.

4 – General English Program

This program designed to teach our students at certain departments at elementary and pre-intermediate level that can be regarded as Survival English.

Program Content: We offer 3-6 hours of yearly or semester based English classes considering the requirements of each department.

Exam Format: Exams are mostly based on multiple choice tests, homework and student’s classroom performance.

Each of four programs has variable book sets that are relevant to their purpose and level of English.
